Preparing for Christingle
Friday 23rd November.
Mr Roger Lamb joined us for our wonderful Reception class celebration assembly.
He complimented us all on our charitable donations to Children In Need and our shoebox appeal. He talked about another opportunity for us to make a difference - this time to collect for the Childrens society through the Christingle Service.
This year our Christingle Service will be a combined service with other local schools and churches.
It will be held at Spetisbury Church on Sunday December 2nd at 4pm.
The service, as always, will be a moving reminder of how Jesus 'The Light of the World' is at our centre guarding us.
The collections will go to help young people who are experiencing difficulties in managing their lives., to help them feel God's love working in the community and enabling them to find their way.
Please put the date in your diaries!

St Columba
This morning I spent some time explaining Anti-Bullying Week 2012 - which meant I didn't get a chance to talk about St Columba.
Please watch the video below as this links to your assemblies this week.
Anti-Bullying Week 2012
“We’re better without bullying”
Now, get your head working... what could you produce? A poster? A painting? A story? A song? A t-shirt? The list could go on and on... you choose!
Take all the things you've learned about bullying over the years and use that knowledge to enter our competition. Your work could be published on the school website! You could even win a prize!
Look for more details on the school website during this week. Good luck!

Pride - As Deadly As a Poison?
What do you make of this fable?
How does it link to the story of Icarus?

Humility - Pride Before A Fall?
This is a fantastic painting by Pieter Bruegel. The painting is called Landscape with the Fall of Icarus and was painted in around 1558!!
Have a close look... can you find the ill-fated Icarus? What had happened to him?
When is pride good and when can it cause us problems?

Poppies
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

That mark our place; and in the sky

Dream Big...
Shawn Johnson's love of learning
At 14, gymnast Shawn Johnson wanted to be treated like every other pupil at her school in Iowa, USA.
That's easier said than done when you've just returned from the Beijing Olympics with a gold medal around your neck.
How can God help us achieve these aims?

ToyBox Charity
Where do you call home?
I bet it's not the street and I bet you're not expecting to go out and beg for food today to survive...
... but these children do call the streets their home and they will be begging for food to survive...
How does the ToyBox Appeal help children like this and where?

Hope for the Future
"Thank you Lord for your promises to us. We look forward to the time when there will be no more sadness and tears. Help us to play our part in doing what we can to make the world a better place."
Amen

The Rainbow
This is Desmond Tutu (we talked about him in assembly on Monday).
He once said:
"Look at your hands - different colours representing different people.
You are the Rainbow People of God." - December 1991
What does he mean by that?
Here are Mr Lavis' children:
How are they linked to Tutu's idea of "Rainbow People of God?"
Noah's Ark
Goodness me - wasn't God cross!?
How can we deal with things that we are disappointed with? We can't just rub all things out and start again...
Desmond Tutu once said:
“Don't raise your voice, improve your argument.” ― Desmond Tutu
What do we think about that?

Holman Hunt's: The Light of the World
This is an iconic painting. It has imagery dripping from it - but what does it all mean?
Have a look (closely) then follow this link for an explanation...

Holy Week
This week we have been looking at Holy Week.
Below is a video that shows all the events of Holy Week... can you match your knowledge to the action?
To get used to using the "Worry Button" - can you write to me to tell me what you've found out?

The Dorcas Society
A Dorcas Society is a local group of people, usually based in a church, with a mission of providing clothing to the poor.
The original society was founded in Douglas, Isle of Man on December 1, 1834, as part of the community's thanksgiving for being spared from an outbreak of cholera. The poorer families in town had their clothes and bedding destroyed as part of the effort to prevent the disease. Today there are other Dorcas societies around the world, providing clothing and other physical needs.
The society is named after a person (Tabitha, also called Dorcas) described in the Acts of the Apostles (Chapter 9, v. 36).
How can we learn from this? How could we make a difference?
